Republic Cement Corporation becomes Lafarge Republic, Inc.

Makati City, 17 July 2012 – The Securities and Exchange Commission has approved the amendment of the Articles of Incorporation of Lafarge-associated company, Republic Cement Corporation to effect the change of its name from Republic Cement Corporation (RCC) to Lafarge Republic, Inc. (LRI).

The names of two Lafarge Republic, Inc. subsidiaries have also been changed; Iligan Cement Corporation is now Lafarge Iligan, Inc. while Mindanao Portland Cement Corporation is now Lafarge Mindanao, Inc.

At the Annual General Meeting for its stockholders last May 29, Lafarge Republic, Inc. President Renato Sunico declared that the change effectively combines the strength of the global brand “LAFARGE” with the solid reputation in the Philippines of the “Republic” name while further increasing awareness of the Company’s association with LAFARGE, a world leader in building materials.

“This evolution is fully aligned with our intent to further develop innovative construction solutions by leveraging on LAFARGE’s global expertise and the Republic Group’s local experience,” shared Sunico.

Sunico added that LAFARGE’s advanced R&D capabilities backed by its Research Center near Lyon in France which houses the world’s largest building materials laboratory, allows LRI to introduce to the Philippine market products of superior performance that more than satisfy customer requirements and at the same time are increasingly environment-friendly.

“Our research and marketing teams work hand in hand, building close relationships with the construction industry to create breakthrough solutions that add value for everyone,” Sunico noted.

“In the Philippines, the Republic Group’s legacy of excellence from over half a century of local experience in the construction industry has been a great asset as it provides us with insights that allow us to understand the needs of Filipinos from all walks of life,” he added.

Apart from the change in company name, the synergies from both the Lafarge and Republic names will also be reflected in the product packaging.

“All of our products were developed using the knowledge and expertise of both LAFARGE and the Republic Group of companies and we would like to emphasize that visually as well through their packaging,” said Sunico.

The new packaging distinguishes each product type by color and unique markings. Each carries information useful to end-users.

Sunico noted that the company has blended cement products that use fly-ash, a by-product of coal-fired power plants, in place of clinker, the main ingredient of cement. According to  the results of a Life Cycle Analysis conducted by WWF Philippines, blended cement products result in lower carbon dioxide emission as opposed to Ordinary Portland Cement, which is the industry standard.

“We are particularly proud of the fact that our products are manufactured using alternative fuel like rice husks and other biomass and processes such as the Waste Heat Recovery system in our Teresa Plant, that leave a lower carbon footprint on our environment,” added Sunico.
