CeMAP’s Ordoñez is new AFCM vice president

Dr. Ernesto M. Ordoñez, president of Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (CeMAP), was elected vice president of the Asean Federation of Cement Manufacturers (AFCM) during the 14th AFCM Conference held recently in Singapore.

Ordoñez will serve as vice president for two years, after which, following tradition, he is expected to be elected as AFCM president for another two years when the federation holds its 15th conference in Vietnam late in 2007.

In the closing ceremonies of the AFCM conference, Ordonez said: “We intend to build on the goodwill AFCM has achieved in the past year. We will do this not only by sharing our best technologies but also by helping each other in the area of international trade policy and practices as we in ASEAN face the globalization challenges and the opportunities today.”

As vice president of AFCM, Ordoñez will help in presiding as well as in planning, organizing and supervising AFCM activities.

Founded on March 5, 1977 in Thailand, AFCM seeks to foster cooperation and coordination among cement manufacturers in the Asean region in line with the objectives of the Asean Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Prior to his appointment as president of CeMAP last September, Ordoñez was Cabinet secretary for Presidential Flagship Programs and Projects and an undersecretary for 16 years with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Agriculture (DA).

It was while he was DTI Undersecretary that he helped introduce the internationally recognized ISO 9000 system into the Philippines, which helped raise the quality of Filipino products and the management of local business operations to global standards.

Ordoñez has a PhD in business administration from New York University, an MA in administrative sciences from Yale and an AB in economics from Ateneo de Manila University where he served as its university student council president.
