THE Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (Cemap) on Tuesday announced the launch of the Philippine Cement and Concrete Decarbonization Roadmap, a long-term strategy to cut carbon emissions while sustaining high-quality cement production for the country’s infrastructure, housing and economic development.
The road map, launched June 29 in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the Government of Canada, sets two targets: reducing clinker (core binding agent) use in cement by 58 percent and raising the use of alternative fuels by 38 percent, both by 2050.
It also promotes refuse-derived fuels, such as trash and plastics, to reduce cement makers’ reliance on coal for cooking clinkers and additives.
Cemap described the road map as a science-based guide for the industry’s decarbonization, built on low-carbon cement alternatives, renewable energy, energy efficiency improvements, new supplementary cementitious materials and the eventual deployment of carbon capture technologies.
“Developing and implementing the [road map] is important because it provides a clear, coordinated strategy for one of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries to reduce emissions, while continuing to support economic growth and infrastructure development,” Cemap president John Reinier Dizon said.
The road map’s development was funded by Canada through its Environment and Climate Change federal department, reflecting its partnership with the Philippines on sustainable industrial development, climate resilience and innovation.
Cemap said it is committed to promoting the road map to advance decarbonization and sustainability across the country’s cement industry.
