Since unsoundness or excessive autoclave expansion is not apparent until several months or years, ASTM C151 Standard Test Method for Autoclave expansion of Hydraulic Cement is a necessary to provide an accelerated method for its determination. It provides an index of potential delayed expansion caused by the hydration of CaO and MgO or both when present in hydraulic cement.
